Mel Journey Memorial Scholarship
The Bremerton Pilots & Tenants Association is offering a Supplemental Scholarship for young men and women who have the desire to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate. This Scholarship is made possible by donations in memory of our fellow pilot and friend, Mel Journey. It was Mel’s wish that funds be available to young men and women in the greater Kitsap Peninsula area dedicated to becoming an aviator.

Scholarships will provide financial assistance in $500.00 increments to selected students striving to receive a Private Pilot Certificate, and may be renewed subject to Renewal Requirements. Matching funds will be disbursed directly to the applicant’s flight school upon verification of attendance and flight hours. In the event that student leaves the flight school before expending the scholarship funds, the remaining funds will be returned to the Bremerton Pilots & Tenants Association. Each qualifying and accepted applicant may receive a maximum of $2,000.00 in matching funds.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
1) Must be at least 15 and not over 18 years of age.
2) Grade Point Average of 3.5 or better.
3) Resident of the greater Kitsap Peninsula area.
4) Is currently enrolled in or planning to enroll in a flight training facility.
5) Must hold or qualify for student pilot medical certificate.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
1) Complete the application form.
2) Submit verification of completed aviation training and flight hours (if any).
3) Submit verification of enrollment or acceptance at flight training facility.
4) Submit a copy of your High School grade transcript.
5) Submit all above materials to the above address.
CRITERIA CONSIDERED IN SELECTION PROCESS:
1) Seriousness of purpose
2) Demonstrated ability and capacity for continued development in aviation
3) Current and past involvement in aviation related activities
4) Letters of achievement from teachers or instructors
5) Scholastic achievement
6) Community involvement
FINAL SELECTION:
Applicants will be selected initially by a screening committee and personally interviewed by the committee prior to final selection.
RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS:
1) Submit verification of completed training and flight hours from the aviation training facility.
2) Show verification that you have spent at least matching funds.
3) Provide letter of progress from flight instructor or flight school chief flight instructor.
4) Submit current High School grade transcript.
